The following are extracts from the October/November 2005 newsletter.

RESEARCH PROVES THE WORTH OF GINKGO BILOBA

If asked to name the top five or ten herbs that are the most clinically tested, most knowledgeable herb researchers would include the standardised extract of Ginkgo leaf (Ginkgo biloba) as a likely candidate. With over 140 published clinical trials documenting the safety and efficacy of certain extracts of Gingko, it was a surprise, and disappointment, to many herb researchers when in August 2002 a negative trial on a leading Ginkgo preparation was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The results however were misrepresented in the media and of course the safety and efficacy of any substance can not be fully evaluated by the results of just one trial.

The good news is that according to the American Botanical Society most Ginkgo Biloba Extract (GBE) trials have been conducted on subjects with cognitive impairment and early stages of Alzheimer’s dementia and the evidence for its safety and efficacy is compelling. The Alzheimer’s Society of England concluded that there were 33 randomized trials that showed “promising evidence” for the use of GBE in the early stages of Alzheimer’s dementia.

“The results show that there is a growing body of evidence in published trials supporting the safety and efficacy of GBE for improving memory, concentration and speed in processing mental functions in non-cognitively impaired adults,” says Mark Blumenthal, Founder and Executive Director of HerbalGram.

He goes on to quote statements from the trial authors themselves, “some of the most common positive neuropsychological effects found for GBE…have been enhanced performances on tasks assessing aspects of memory, attention and speed of processing abilities.”

Dave and Linda White comment

“We have been using Elagen Sport for the past three years and have found it invaluable – when you are training for an ironman triathlon, as well as working full time you require something to help support your immune defences.

Nothing disrupts your training more than illnesses such as colds and flu – consistency is one of the most important aspects of training and through using Elagen Sport we have found that we can train consistently throughout the year.”

DIARY OF A SPORTSWOMAN……

Summers out and accomplished Tri-athlete Leanda Cave is back to give us her regular summary of racing events.

“Unfortunately the World Champs in Japan were for me, a huge disaster – I had to retire from the race after the first four laps on the run due to an asthma attack. I had one prior to leaving the UK and knew that it may pose a problem during the race but prior to racing I felt my lungs were doing OK. However, once under the stress of racing that seemed to change. The reason for the asthma is a mystery to me and my lung function is still not up to scratch now that I am home.

I did, however, manage to finish the World Cup in Beijing, China the week after the Worlds. The air was a lot cooler, less humid and not so polluted, giving my lungs a chance to recover. Although I finished a disappointing 18th I am happy that I made it round the course and experienced first hand the 2008 Olympic venue.

Despite the asthma, I am still free of any colds or flus thanks to Elagen Sport Q10. I don’t think I have had one for a year – that is surely a record for anyone who lives in Swansea!

Next I’m off to Tucson, Arizona in preparation for the Cancun World cup…….

Mark Whittle Comment

“Having now used Elagen Sport for a year – I must admit I have been very pleased with the product – very pleased indeed. Normally, when there is a cold or flu going around my section at work, I’m usually one of the first to catch it. Touch wood I have managed to keep these at bay and I must put this down to my use of Elagen Sport. I have great confidence in this product and recommend it to all my sporting colleagues. I suffered with glandular fever before taking Elagen Sport and there has been no sign of a reoccurrence.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Elagen Sport but the results are all positive – I look forward to continuing my use of your products.”

Royal stamp of approval

The royal family has a tradition of trying alternative treatments and Prince Charles has recently been at the forefront. The Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Health was launched earlier on this year with the hope of signing up 150 GP’s to the new scheme by October 2005. Those who join will become ‘associates’ of the foundation and are expected to offer a wide range of herbal and other alternative treatments to their patients. “We should be providing proven complementary treatments, “ say’s Simon Williams, policy director of the Patients Association. “People are now looking for alternatives to pills and they are more aware of the alternatives out there.”

TIME TO CHANGE

A change is as good as a rest - so they say and with change progress usually follows. This we hope will be the case for Eladon – the marigolds are donned and yes, ready to dust off the cobwebs. Not that our image has ever done us any harm, indeed thousands of you, from TV stars, top models and Olympic gold medal winners, to the likes of me and you, have sworn by Elagen over the past 14 years. We don’t endeavour to keep up with the Jones’s, quite frankly we’re in a different league – but we do like to evolve, not only in making sure our supplements are the best but also, as you will see over the next few months, making sure our image stands out in the crowd. Don’t panic – what’s inside the tub is as good as it has ever been and with our commitment to customer satisfaction it can only get better.
