Olive Leaf Extract

Advances in medicine have developed rapidly over recent years. The application of antibiotics has been of huge benefit the world over in beating infections.

But in recent years we have had to face the prospect, and reality, of many bacteria and infections becoming antibiotic resistant and, therefore, being rendered virtually obsolete in the face of ever more virulent infections.

A powerful, natural Phytochemical has come to the fore recently in the fight against these infections and is commonly known as Olive Leaf Extract or O.L.E.

History

Olive leaves from the tree Olea europaea (along with the oil and fruit), have been utilised for thousands of years . The earliest known usage of Olive Leaf Extract can be traced to the ancient Egyptian culture, where it was extracted and implemented in the mummification process. Over the centuries it has been a staple in the everyday lives of the Mediterranean people, where it is trusted to alleviate pain, fever and infection, and to help maintain a healthy heart.

The Olive Tree is well researched for its phytomedicinal properties, i.e. derived from plants. Over the centuries it has been a staple in the everyday lives of the Mediterranean people, where it is trusted to alleviate pain, fever and infection ,and to help maintain a healthy heart. The Olive Tree is well researched for its phytomedicinal properties, i.e. derived from plants.

Active Ingredients

In the late 19th century a group of scientists investigating the properties of olive leaf, isolated a phenolic compound (a monosaturated fatty acid) which was called 'Oleuropein'. Phenolic compounds are the building blocks of plants Oleuropein was found to be one ingredient in a compound produced by the Olive tree, which makes it particularly resistant to insect and bacterial attack. Oleuropein belongs to a class of chemical compounds which are found in plants. It is found in olive oil and throughout the tree. The active ingredient in Oleuropein was found to be 'elenolic acid'. Once in the body the Oleuropein breaks down into the easily utilised elenolic acid. A European study demonstrated Oleuropein as having positive effects on attempts to lower blood pressure. In a direct correlation, positive effects were also noticed on intestinal muscle spasms, blood flow to the coronary arteries, and in arrhythmias (heart beat irregularities). By the 1960's Upjohn (a major United States pharmaceutical company) had carried out numerous tests and showed that elenolic acid possessed benefits in counteracting a number of viruses, including the common cold and the herpes simplex virus.(1A) Amino Acid production is vital to enable a bacteria, microbe, virus or fungus to survive. Olive leaf extract has been found to successfully interfere with this process.

Areas of use

These plants have an amazing ability to fight and destroy invading pathogens. This mechanism is used to help stimulate and support the human immune system. This has implications for many common health conditions: common colds, influenza, ear and sinus infections, cold sores, the herpes simplex virus, meningitis and pneumonia to name a few.

The Product

Eladon Ltd. recently commissioned an extensive 3 month trial to rate the effectiveness of 3 products in treating the herpes simplex virus. The supplements tested were Olive leaf Extract, Opuntia Streptacantha and L Lysine, Pollen and Propolis. The trial was conducted on a placebo basis and the volunteers were asked questions before they began, kept a calendar throughout the trial and were asked further questions on completion. Olive Leaf Extract was found to be the clear and consistent leader, with Opuntia Streptacantha coming second. The number of people who reported health benefits from taking the supplements Olive leaf Extract and Opuntia Streptacantha far exceeded what is to be expected from the placebo effect. 11 out of the 14 people who took Olive Leaf Extract on the trial reported that they found it of use. 10 out of 14 people found that those outbreaks that did occur were far less severe and less long lived.

Dosage

A popular and effective way of supplementing Olive leaf extract is one 400mg tablet before or after a meal. An example of a more 'therapeutic' dose for the common cold, 'flu, sinus infections and basic respiratory tract infections, the dose would increase to two 400 mg tablets every day -one morning and evening. For acute infections such as sore throat, swollen glands, fever etc., the dose may be further increased to three 400 mg tablets daily, one to be taken in the morning, one in the afternoon and then finally one before bed in the evening. Returning to the maintenance dose when the infection has subsided if required.

'Die-off effect'

A few users may experience 'die off' detoxification symptoms when they begin using an extract of Olive Leaf. Symptoms can begin almost immediately after starting the supplement and can affect different people in different ways. Reactions can include fatigue, diarrhoea, headaches, muscle/ joint aches or flu like symptoms. The severity of symptoms experienced will be dependent on the severity of the original infection. Although these symptoms are often unpleasant, it should be remembered that these are positive signs that your body is starting to fight and expel the infection. There are a number of options should you experience any unpleasant effects: - Reduce the number of tablets or even stop them altogether for a while. -You may need a day or two, even a week, to allow your body to process the 'die off'. -When you feel better you can resume the supplement at a lower dosage and increase this slowly. Other than these die off effects, it is rare that Olive leaf extract causes any side effects in users. Research has indicated that doses many times higher than those recommended are unlikely to produce any toxic or adverse effects.
